Desolination Project Demo Plant

A significant milestone at Protarget AG: our container for the DESOLINATION project is now en route to Saudi Arabia. Over the past weeks, our team has worked diligently to ensure its timely completion.

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia experiences some of the highest temperatures in the world and is the largest country without perennial rivers. This geographical and climatic context contributes to a significant water scarcity, making desalination a critical process for providing potable water. Currently, approximately 50% of the water used in Saudi Arabia is sourced from desalination.

The DESOLINATION project, located at King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aims to harness solar energy and energy utilized from transcritical CO2 cycle to desalinate water via Forward Osmosis (FO).

A key component of this project is the Adaptive Coupling system, which functions as an intelligent storage solution between the sources of energy and the desalination section. This system ensures a continuous and uninterrupted desalination process through efficient storage.

The benefits of this system are:

  • Increased flexibility regarding the source of energy for the desalination system.
  • Ability to balance significantly different heat outputs from the two power cycles.
  • Management of transient states and to ensure a uniform energy supply to the desalination system.
  • Allowance of the desalination system operation when neither of the power blocks are running (length of time depending on Thermal Energy Storage (TES) size).
